Why is the assissination of Franz Ferdinand the main cause of WW1?

It isn’t the sole cause of the war, but rather the trip latch that caused other things to fall into place. When those fell into place, the war was certainly inevitable. Let’s look at the causes in the order in which they happened.

5…the Russians to call on the French for help. They were a longtime Russian ally who had loaned money to support the Russian czar (tsar).
6…the Germans saw this move on the French as threatening, so they invaded France, but made the mistake of forgetting the Belgians were guaranteed their neutrality by the British through an older Treaty of Ghent in 1837. This was done because Belgium could not protect itself and the British wanted to guarantee it sovereignty. So,….

8…specifically, Americans who were angered by the sinking of shipping flying the American flag on the open or high seas, a clear violation of international law and treaty, even in 1914.
There you have the basic alignment of the First World War. The players were brought to action by their alliances as the whole of pre-war Europe had sought to maintain peace by a complex set of alliances.
