In a typical music hall, which side should I sit in to get the best sound out of a piano concert?
Usually the grand piano is positioned on the stage with its right side facing (closest) to the audience. I am curious which side should get the best sound: left (From the audience’s point of view), center, or right (I doubt right is the one)?
I would like to know the physics behind it, if you know, thanks.
In most halls, the best sound is toward the center–measured both right-left and front-back.
The lid of the piano acts as a resonant surface. If closed, it dampens the sound. Most concert pianists prop it up, in which case the sound will be most direct if you’re facing it. Go too far left or right, and more of the sound you hear will be deflected from walls, floors, other patrons. Too far in front prevents the sound of the strings from blending well, but too far back gets you near the faint echo from the back wall (and the damper of any balconies that overhang, etc.).
If the pianist is one who removes the lid entirely, then all bets are off and the best sound will depend on the hall and on how the stage is set up.
Note that all of these differences, if you’re in a properly designed hall, will be so minute that fewer than 10% of the audience would be able to discern them.
