Jeffrey Daniels of Shalimar said he originated the “moonwalk”(disco era)–not Michael Jackson, is this true?
There is a program (“Unsung”) about black groups and singing acts that are no longer in existence. The group highlighted was Shalimar–Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniels and Howard Hewitt. Jeffrey Daniels said that he was on a promotional tour in Europe in the 80′s. It had him on film doing the “moonwalk”. When did Michael first perform the “moonwalk”? Was it in the early 90′s?
It was called a backslide and not yet moonwalk when Jeff Daniels was doing it even on TV shows in the late ’70′s to early 80′s and was considered like a street dance that were just taken as ghetto moves much like how hiphop started only as ghetto dance and not popular dance. MJ saw it, learned it from Jeff himself then he performed Billie Jean for the first time in the Motown 25 anniversary in 1983 then did the move. The thing is when MJ did it, though it was technically and basically a backslide, he added something to it that when he performed it, it suddenly got accepted not just as one of those street dance moves but a jaw dropping flabbergasting dance step that everyone all of a sudden wanted to learn themselves because the way he did it was so cool, like defying gravity. The next day, the newspapers reported about the performance and were the ones that came up the the term “moonwalk”. It was originally just a backslide but when MJ did it, it became the “moonwalk”.
